They are quite useful in diplomatic encounters as well as during certain exploration missions that might require advanced linguistic capabilities. As a side benefit, Universal Translators provide some use in space combat, adding somewhat to the capabilities of a ship's Bridge crew should they manage to intercept alien transmissions.
