Perimeter Shields emit a dampening field around a ground encampment, neutralizing some varieties of harmful radiation. It isn't a perfect defense against enemy nuclear weapons, but the field does reduce radiation enough to give your troopers a chance—and anything is better than unprotected exposure to a nearby atomic blast. Some protection against orbital bombardment is also gained, though the Perimeter Shield has no effect on a direct hit by kinetic or conventional explosive weaponry.
